On Sunday, August 20th, we will have a Q&A session with the elders regarding the recent statement put out by the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA). The meeting will be after church in either the Fellowship Hall or Room 120. Child care will be provided for those who would like to participate.

A letter from our elders, including links to the EFCA statement, is below.

To the First Free Congregation:

The Elders were recently made aware of a new statement released by the denomination our church is affiliated with, the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA).

The statement (found here https://www.efca.org/where-we-stand-in-the-efca-denials-and-affirmations) clarifies the EFCA’s stance on current social issues that have gained the attention of Christians over the past decade.

Considering that First Free is planning a series of strategic planning meetings involving leaders and fellow members that are intended to create a ministry vision and plan for First Free in the coming years, the Elders thought it would be important and instructive for our members to engage with this statement prior to our planned Elder Q-and-A on August 20.

The video of Kevin Kompelien, president of the EFCA, delivering the statement can be found here: https://vimeo.com/844702517

While there are some encouraging aspects, much of the statement is disheartening to us as Elders and seems to highlight possible diverging paths of the denomination and our congregation. At this time, churches within the EFCA are not required to agree with these denials and affirmations, but the denomination leadership has taken a stance.

Without further comment, we would encourage everyone to read the statement or watch the presentation (a little under 10 minutes long) and prayerfully consider the ramifications in light of First Free’s desire to reclaim a dynamic presence in Andersonville and its surrounding communities. While we are not expecting a unanimous reaction from our congregants, we do hope to receive a sincere, thoughtful response that will contribute to our ongoing discussion and planning, as we seek the Lord’s will and guidance.

On August 20, the church will provide child care for those who need it during the Q-and-A.

If you cannot make the Q-and-A session but have questions or concerns related to this topic or other matters, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at elders@firstfree.com to schedule a meeting with Pastor Matt or another Elder.

Sincerely in Christ,

The First Free Elders
