Andersonville Arts Weekend is coming up and we’ll be opening our doors to the community, to see the work of Raúl Ortiz on display in our Sanctuary, offering a quiet moment of contemplation and time away from everything else. Last year, we encountered people who spent time not only discussing their take on the artwork, but also on their feelings about church, life, and the neighborhood.
We are calling for volunteers to join with us for an hour or two on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday afternoons to help us greet people. See our hours below. If you can help out, please talk to Dan Addington, contact the First Free office, or grab your spot right away via Signup.com.
Hours
Opening Friday October 4th: 6 pm – 9 pm
Saturday, October 5th: 2 pm – 6 pm
Sunday, October 6th: 2 pm – 6 pm
Raúl Ortiz
Raúl was born in Mexico and grew up in Little Village. He has exhibited professionally for 20 years in Chicago, and currently resides in the Andersonville/Uptown area. Raul is inspired both by nature, and the visual culture that surrounds us daily in the architecture and design elements that exist all around us. He has a love of color and lively composition, and is inspired by the Impressionists, especially Monet, updating those influences in a decidedly contemporary way. Pattern, rhythm, and color harmonies live in constant motion in his work. For Raul, color carries meaning in the same way that sound, and even text is able to do. We just need to listen. Raul has exhibited in Museums and galleries throughout the Midwest, and extensively in Chicago. His work can be found in many private and public collections throughout the US.
